Week 11 Media Culture Class

This week class can be said is not boring as most of the time is just watch video clips. Beside that, the video clip is quite interesting too. The university that show in the video clip is very fun and cool as every student get a new PDA to use. There are many functions too. It is really fun.

Possibility To Reshape New Culture Via New Technology

From my opinion, I think that new culture can be reshaped through new technology. This is because our lives are always affect by the things around us. People always invent new technology to upgrade our living standard. Culture can be said as the way we live. The purpose of creating new technology is to improve our livestyle, so sure we will use it. After that, we will get use to the new technology if it is useful, and obselete the old technology. People always tend to get an easier lifestyle to live. As this going on, our culture will be influenced by it too. Some old and trouble culture will become unnecessary and being forced out.

Culture Influences Through Technology

Nowsaday, our technology has become very advance as many countries invent many new technology to increase our standard of lives. As the new technology appear, our culture will get affect by it too.
In this world, the letter culture is slowly become extinct because of the invention of email. Last time, the old generation always write letters to each other to communicate with their freinds and family. After the email appear in public's life, many people start to use email to communicate. Email is faster because we no need to wait for the posmen to send the letter. We also can save the money as we no need to buy the stamp for sending the letter.
Besides that, last time people likes to find pen-pal and write letter for them but now we can easily get new friends from the internet. This is also the contribution of technology.

Week 10 Media Culture Class

This week, I have watched a very boring video clip titled "The Power Of Nightmare". I feel very sleepy because I cannot understand what this video clip is talking about. I hope next time no need to watch this kind of video clip.

Media Imperialism

In the documantary titled "The Power of Nightmares (Part-3 Shadow In The Caves)" shown in the class, this episode addresses the actual rise of al-Qaeda. Curtis argues that, after their failed revolutions, bin Laden and Zawahiri had little or no popular support, let alone a serious complex organisation of terrorists, and were dependent upon independent operatives to carry out their new call for jihad. The film instead argues that in order to prosecute bin Laden in absentia for the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings, US prosecutors had to prove he was the head of a criminal organisation responsible for the bombings. They find a former associate of bin Laden, Jamal al-Fadl, and pay him to testify that bin Laden was the head of a massive terrorist organisation called "al-Qaeda". With the September 11th attacks, Neo-Conservatives in the new Republican government of George W. Bush use this created concept of an organisation to justify another crusade against a new evil enemy, leading to the launch of the War on Terrorism.

The media imperialism is a theory stating that smaller or weaker countries are losing their indentity or being swallowed up by bigger countries due to force feeding media from larger countries. From this video clip, U.S. is the larger countries which tries to attack Iraq which is weaker country by using the dirty trick to make a reason to attack their enemy for getting benifits from this matter. They control the media to spread only the news that is benefit to themselve.

Week 9 Media Culture Class

I have learn many new concepts in media culture study. McLuhan's Tetrad Of Media concept is very interesting. I also know how to differentiate cool and hot media.

McLuhan's Tetrad Of Media In Media

As I have learned from the notes, McLuhan developed his idea about media in a simple concept titled "Tetrad Of Media". This concept included four laws which are enhances, obsoles, retrieves, and reverses.
I choose instant messaging as an example to explain McLuhan's Tetrad Of Media. First, by using instant messaging in our lives, we have enhanced in the terms of voice and words because we can chat with people in the form of words or voices. Second, instant messaging makes signal smoke and letter obsolete because it is faster and easier to use. Third, our sense of communication have retrieved as instant messaging let us communicate with people no matter where they are. The last part which is the reverse part, instant messaging will cause people get into many troubles like disturb by strangers.

Week 8 Media Culture Class

This week I have learn Popular Culture Studies. I get to know the the theory of cultural industry that let me more understand about media in our everyday lives. Besides that, I have also learn the concepts of low culture and high culture.

Obscenity, Pornography And Indecency

Obscenity is a term that is usually used in a legal context to describe expressions that offend the prevalent sexual morality of the time. Pornography is the depiction of explicit sexual subject matter for the purpose of sexually exciting the viewer. Indecency is the state or quality of being unseemly or immodest.
From the defination of these three words, pornography is different from the two other words meaning. Pornography is only the desciption of the sexually acting to agitate the audience. It does not include any action in a media based product. Obscenity and Indecency is nearly the same as they include the immorality behaviour. The only different is obscenity is usually used in legal context in words, images, actions whereas indecency is the speech in the state of being crude and offensive, typically in a sexual manner.

Week 7 Media Cultural Class

This week is talked about the media representation and cultural stereotype. I have learned that media representation is the media products which are copying from the 'real world'. Cultural stereotype is the application of one characteristic that is usually bad in a whole group of people. This is an interesting class as media is based on our everyday life and I have never think of there is cultural stereotype in media. A group of people is being labelled with one characteristic. I have never realize it.

Media Literacy

"Media literacy is the process of accessing, analyzing, evaluating and creating message in a wide variety of media modes, genres and froms" (Wikipedia). It uses critical thinking skills on every media based product. It helps us to ask question about where, what and why is the media been produced.
It is important for FCM students to have media literacy skill because we are the creator of the media based products. We need to know the purpose of creating a new media products and how to catch the attention of the audience. Using media literacy, we will be able to produce a good media based product as we know the skill to analyse it. We can bring out our messages clearly to the audience. Moreover, we can also be aware of the greatness of misusing the media.

Week 6 Media Culture Class

This week have no Media Culture class so no comment.

Media Stereotype

In my opinion, media stereotype is like a code or symbol that most of the people will understand that group of people in the same way, especially in races, gender, social role and sexual orientation.

I have watch an anime entitled "Code Geass" that produced by Japan. In that anime, Japan was conquered by a country named Britannia and Japan have been forced to change their name into Area 11. The Britannian is just symbolized the European that had been captured many countries in Asia in the past. The Japanese is represent the Asian who was been conquered by the European. Beside that, this anime also show how soldiers destroy other people's country without hesitation. This also show the invasion of European in their blood. All these are just my personal opinion and have no prejudice about any people.

Week 5 Media Culture Class

I don't have any critics in this week. The notes that the lecturer gave is very detail. It will become easier when I do my review before the examination. Thank you.

What Is On The Internet Is True?

We can get any kind of information in the Internet. Just one click, we can know what we want to know. This is an easy way to get the information but we can't make sure the information is true or false. So, I don't often take what is on the Internet as truth.

I can always receive many forward messages from my friends. Some of them is just too ridiculous to believe they are true. I will think that such a thing won't exist in this world. Beside that, technology is very advanced nowsaday. Normal people or even children can post any kind of things on the Internet whether they are true or false as long as they know how to access the Internet. There are times that people spread all kinds of rumors, lies and innuendo. I generally won't care about them because they are none of my business. Even they do, I will only believe it if there are evidence to prove it.

Although there are many people like to play in the Internet, there are still have many information and news which are true. I just need to check the sources before I want to use that information. I will also ask other people's opinion to prevent mistake happen. The most important thing is we need to analyse it.

How Social Media Affect My Life

Social media let me get more chances to connect with my friends no matter how far they go study or work. My friends have friendster or blogs so I can know how are they and what are they doing at present. They can get my latest news too. Social media helps me to strongthen our friendship. I still can have them to support me when they are not by my side and the other way round too. Sometimes, even I am not at the event that my friend organized, I still can feel their happiness when they post in their blog. We can share interesting video and latest news with each other. I also get to know other people through social media. This is an interesting way to make friends. Beside that, I can get many information through social media. Pictures, videos, articles and many more can let me learn many new things which are not able to learn in the textbooks. This upgrade my knowledge when I can learn from others' experiences. Life will become more interesting that I have ever thought about it.
